chock-a-block with whom? the great unemployed?

WHY should we be funding them?

If I want to go and see a film - I should pay for the privelige
Why should I get a book free ?
veritas the idea that a government should not run a deficit is like saying no-one should have a mortgage.

ITK- I love my state funded libraries-the 2 I go to are chock a block.
BR Quite right.

Our society is basically funded by taxes on work that took place 50 to 200 years ago. Royalties coming in for inventions and companies that have invested their massive profits.

In 2010 most people are non productive. We exists in service industries like Music to cater for the "Living Standards" of the country.

Therefore, only about 20% of all jobs are essential. We could cut out nearly all state jobs.

In fact the Police actually allow criminals to flourish to justify their existence - the same with courts. The army has to find pointless wars ( Afganistan ) to fight and then we have Pen Pushers who make up pointless rules to enforce ( Health and Safety )

This is because our society does not support 50 million jobs. It probably supports less than 5 million essential jobs.

We should employ more teachers - more doctors and nurses. In fact just think about where there are services which everyone needs but we constantly have to wait.

The New Labour State was so fat on itself that JK's view is right. It is near collapse and looking around Western Europe it seems we are not the only ones.

This seems to be the end of Capitalism. It has basically run out of steam. We are on the edge of change - whether that change comes quickly or takes a century I have no idea - but it is happening/
JK2006 If I was God, I'd be terribly tempted to scrap Parliament and put King Charles in charge.

We need to cut radically not to solve the deficit but to increase efficiency and stop waste - paying bad people to do bad jobs badly.

Huge parts of the country exist purely on state-funded jobs.

Visited my local library this morning - there were huge numbers of staff all standing around with nothing to do.
Why do we fund libraries at all these days?
They were introduced in Victorian times (when no one could afford a book).
