Locked Out |
Breaking news this morning.
A couple are claiming public money to pay for an obscenely expensive wedding and afterwards will continue to fund an even more obscenely expensive life in a huge house through the same public means.
If they were on income support the nation - with the tabloids in the vanguard of the attack -would be baying for blood. Instead the whole nation is going moon eyed over the prospect of this hugely expensive couple - who cost the nation more than any benefit scrounger could in his wildest dreams even begin to imagine getting just the tiniest bit of - getting hitched, even though - given the family history - it probably won't be for very long.
Am I annoyed by all this? Well yes, but possibly not for the reasons you think.
What really fries my ham is the fawning, unreasoning devotion that makes a life on benefits such a stigma in the case of the unemployed but such an easy, uncritical ride when that benefit is the Civil List.
You can call my motivations what you like, and I recognise the possibility that I'm a traitor and disloyal citizen sorry subject.
But at least I hope I also recognise hypocrisy when I see it. And I'm looking at it right now. Excuse me, I think I'll turn this TV off now. A media-free day beckons very temptingly. |

And the couple choose to give an exclusive interview to ITV! Aren't they aware that there's a public service broadcaster around to do this sort of thing, or as they as petty as that pinheaded popinjay Charles? If William was in America he'd be sitting on a street and blowing into a cider jug somewhere in Alabama, and she'd be, well, doing about as much as she's doing here. Ghastly. |

But it's a good story, Pru. It's got celebs {Prince Rambo and Posh Totty}, helicopters, and... well... everything!
The nation probably needs something to cheer itself up. But somehow I feel that the millions that will be spent on the nuptials of these two products of an already lavish upbringing will amount to a slap in the face for everyone who works hard but gets made redundant anyway next year. You're right, there are chips on both of my shoulders. I like to think it adds balance. |
