The family in question went on to have between 12 and 14 children (of whom about 8 lived to a reasonable age).

So thats what they mean by "historical" offences.

Nothing unusual about it. Katherine of Aragon was only 12 years younger than her mother. At a time when life was quite often very short and infant mortality was terribly high young girls with as many years of fertility ahead of them were the preferred brood mares of the ruling classes. And everyone else for that matter. But it's always a little more spicy if it's the aristocracy that are at it. The age of consent was raised by the Victorians who {quite correctly} thought that 11 was too low. That should give a pointer to the acceptability - and common practice - of early marriage and childbirth.

I've just come across (in a book) a reference to a very distant relative (14thC) which described his wife as being "not quite 12 years old" !
Let's hope ye olde Maxwell Clifford doesn't hear about it!
