'knee jerk populist politics' is entirely correct.
This was not borne out of studies that showed a 'register' may help-it is pandering to the media who pander to the public's prejudices and law made via media is always bad...very very bad. But common.
Those who commit a crime are already on a register- it's called a criminal record.
Having a criminal record has never stopped anyone re-offending yet.
JK is entirely correct..why not have them for every class of crime ?...but then that would be simply doubling up on what's already there..criminal records. |

Well done JK, you made your case articulately and with dignity.
The sad truth is that Britain no longer is a civilised country. Seeing Nick Clegg, the supposed leader of British 'liberalism', promise to respect the human rights of sex offenders no more than is legally necessary... that was pretty sickening.
I was beginning to think that, with the abolishing of the vetting scheme, the coalition were serious about putting an end to nuLabor's knee jerk populism politics and the paedohysteria that is eating away at the fabric of society. Appears not.
There is certainly a need for the Register; I know someone who applied to teach teenagers cricket and had to go through the checking system. Of course he got through the checks being made and in the process they caught a couple of applicants who, as it turned out, were on the Register. So yes, it's definitely a good thing. |

Unfortunately, all politicians - if they ever hope to get elected and actually do something concrete - have to pass the "mindless fodder who read tabloids" hurdle first. |
