No..this acolade would go to Stokesay Castle. near Ludlow (not a castle)

And Ivor is correct about how easy it is to get to these places.

Polesden Lacey - near Dorking is another gem, albeit in a more recent style/era.
Ivor I agree - and there are numerous similar places, usually run by English Heritage or the National Trust.

Pay one fee (to each organisation) and you have free entry to thousands of locations in the UK.

Great value for money.
In The Know Visited again ... lovely exhibition of the costumes from the new Jane Eyre film.

Haddon - probably England's finest medieval manor house - has, of course, been used as a location for numerous costume dramas and films (and is a particular favourite location for the BBC).
