And here's a bit of trivia - the original choice to play Mainwaring and Wilson was Arthur Lowe (as Wilson) and his boss from the Coronation Street spin-off 'Pardon the Expression,' Robert Dorning, as Mainwaring. Michael Mills overruled Dorning because he loved John Le Mesurier so much, and then they decided to make the posh one a sergeant so Arthur became Mainwaring.
Another odd bit of trivia: the woman who sometimes popped up in Dad's Army as Godfrey's sister (and a waitress in the tea rooms) was actually Arthur's wife. She was a shocking actress and a drunk, but Arthur felt loyal to her so always insisted on getting her a job in productions that he was in. It led to him missing out a few really good projects. When the cast of Dad's Army had a farewell dinner, Arthur's wife was so drunk she slid off her chair and under the table while Arthur was making a speech. He just glanced down, winced and carried on.

Some of us actually watched it happen as live in our teens, Giles.
Yes, the answer is - Swindley was an early, magnificent Coronation Street character portrayed by the wonderful Arthur Lowe from 1962-1965.
My friend Damon Rochefort is a current Corrie writer - bring back Swindley, I say!

He left poor Emily Nugent at the altar he did. I watched it on my Coronation Street dvd box set.

Nice link ITK though we have to watch the video to find out the actual answer... and even there they don't actually answer the question by name...
