There are three A "Marmite" foods people either love or hate; Avocados - probably my favourite ever vegetable; I eat one every day; Artichoke (like asparagus there are two kinds but the root white vegetable - makes fantastic soup and is, I believe, called Jerusalem); and Asparagus.
I adore all three!

You are right about asparagus being big in Germany. I've just got back from 3 days in Hannover, and the restarants there have special "Asparagus Menus". We had some lovely means out. The think I noticed was how cheap everything is this year - especially the wine!

Bank Holiday Monday dinner - a fabulous roast duck; roast potatoes; white asparagus (big in Germany) with Hollandaise sauce; Tsingtao beer. Blueberries and cream.

I'm not keen on asparagus but I love Iberico ham.

Purchased in Harrods - four slices of delicious Iberico ham (£20); fresh Wye Valley English asparagus (just in season with flood problems - £15 for 6 sticks); new potatoes in herb butter; glass of Sancerre white wine with ice cold sparking San Pellegrino water (poor man's Champagne but tastes far nicer)... the taste of a British spring (with just a hint of Spain and Italy).
