I thought of those lines last Monday night, as I watched Panorama's television account of the Orkney 'Satanic abuse' scandal. They come from W H Auden's poem 'Voltaire at Ferney', which is about the defence of humanity against superstitious madness. Panorama played an audiotape: a six- year-old girl screaming tearful denials to three adult interrogators.
"He did so put his dickie in your fanny" they insisted.
She screamed again… "NO!”
Charles Neal Ascherson (b. 5 October, 1932) is a Scottish journalist, born in Edinburgh and educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge, where he read history. He was described by the historian, Eric Hobsbawm, as "perhaps the most brilliant student I ever had. I didn't really teach him much, I just let him get on with it." After graduating with a starred First, he declined offers to pursue an academic career. Instead, he chose a career in journalism, first at the Manchester Guardian and then at The Scotsman (1959-1960), The Observer (1960-1990) and the Independent on Sunday (1990-1998).

He was a superb and thorough investigative reporter who really went into detail and refused to be swayed either way. His coverage of the Jersey school was extraordinary. His book The Secret of Bryn Estyn is obligatory reading for anyone who wants to take this problem seriously. I've pointed many intelligent executives, editors and journalists at it and every one has gasped at how incredibly detailed his analysis was.
He was a JK supporter as is his close friend and the only other truly respected successor to Ludovic Kennedy - Bob Woffinden (we're having lunch today).
Richard's early and sudden death was a tragedy.
This area is so easily dismissed and replaced by emotive instinct.
Do buy the book (I think it's still available via Amazon though you may have to pay through the nose). It will open your eyes. |

Webster was a very sane normal family man who did thorough investigations but sadly passed a way suddenly 2 years ago. |

It is quite the most shocking and compelling piece I have read about paedohysteria. And this principle of "corroboration by volume" without regard to quality is strikingly reminiscent of Savile.

Apart from the fact the police and the media seem to be joined at the hip leaking real or fabricated information about anyone newsworthy. Man found asleep in his car, no story unless it's George Michael in which case it's on the news in minutes and reporters dispatched to the scene. |
