The Cat It was on the main BBC and ITV News bulletins of the day. That's where I heard it.

"Genius" in this context is relative. Compared to today's new wave of unfunny 'comedians', he was in my opinion a comic genius.

He also used to work down the mines before becoming a pro footballer.
Robbiex Yeah, Charlie was a funny guy, though genius is overstating it, some people call illiterate Manc songwriter Shaun Ryder a genius!!! Also did you know that Charlie also used to be a professional footballer for Doncaster Rovers. Also if he was a genius the first time I would hear about his death wouldn't be on these pages, days after the event.
The Cat It's all a matter of taste.

Some people call Peter Kay a comic genius, but I find him seriosly unfunny.

Charlie Williams always made me laugh.
In The Know (but not this time) A real nice guy - quite probably - but comic genius???

I thought he was very run-of-the-mill and predictable (which is why his fame didn't last very long !)
The Cat A true comic genius and a real nice guy.
