The last "industry only" show in the Grosvenor House.
We had a great time; I wrote and hosted it; Michael Hurll directed it and striking BBC electricians rocked his scanner from side to side throughout the show. The poor man was nearly seasick.
It was live - from 7-9. We finished spot on time, for the 9.00 o'clock news.
Best single went to the sweet, innocent Pet Shop Boys. Everyone said Neil Tennant sounded like me. I got Boy George, in the middle of his tabloid heroin scandal, to give the award. Virgin told me not to book him; he wasn't reliable. I ignored them and he was brilliant.
To my delight, Best British Male was one of my young proteges - Peter Gabriel.
Twenty two years earlier I had been acclaimed as a great new young discovery myself (on the British Rock and Pop Awards) for my first hit in 1965.
