Honorable mention to Máire Ní Bhraonáin (always thought she was a better singer than her commercially more successful sister Enya).

Worldwide, Aretha has to be well up there certainly, also Diana Ross and Tammi Terrell (whose early death may have been indirectly caused by her abuse at the hands of a very well known male Motown singer some regard as a hero.)

Agree with Dusty for Best British.

Only unsure about your Number 3's - Karen was OK but not great, to me, and I never warmed to that style of singing that Amy embraced - always sounded like Granny in the Beverley Hillbillies to me.

there's no right or wrong answer to this one. Here's my Top 3 UK and ROW
Ella Fitzgerald
Aretha Franklin
Karen Carpenter
Adele
Annie Lennox
Amy Winehouse
I love the Dusty in Memphis album and i could make a case for her being on my list but IMHO the other three have equal or better claims
