Topic History of: As you are all obsessed by Eurovision .... Max. showing the last 5 posts - (Last post first)

The original idea (besides the promotion of Europe) was a competion for writers. Are there any careers of songwriters (apart from B&B from ABBA) based on their eurovision success? |

Correct ! Didn't watch a second of MYMU - too busy doing something useful !
I've no problem with people liking it for it's novelty value - but the point of this post was to ask why people (esp supposed music professional) take it seriously - as if it actually mattered! As if, a credible artist would ever be "found"!
(I wonder whatever happened to Rikki, Ryder, Belle & The Devotions, Live Report, Lyndsey Dracuss etc al? Back in the working men's club - serving behind the bar - I suspect !) |

People like Vicky Leandros and Nicole also had a few hits here after winning.
Sorry, Fred - your memory is playing tricks on you!
Vicky Leandros - just one week (at No 40) after Eurovision !
2 Vicky Leandros Come What May Apr 1972
40 Vicky Leandros The Love In Your Eyes Jan 1973
and Nicole ?
Never appeared in the chart again !
There are basically 2 types of act in Eurovision - the freaks / no-hopers who want 10 mins of fame (Jemini / Lordi / Dana International etc) and the has-beens who are desperately trying to hold onto / resurrect a career (Nicky French / Katrina etc)
Hmm, something tells me you won't be joining us down the local for the big day (truth be told I haven't seen it for a number of years either).
But MM, I come to nitpick. Vicky Leandros had a very healthy career in France, Germany and Greece and is still doing the nostalgia circuit. Even my parents had a single version of "Apr |

I take it you're not a fan of Eurovision.
Maybe you miss the point of the contest. It's not about building careers. It's about nations coming together to share some music and have some fun. If some of them are never heard of again, so what? They had their moment of fame, and probably enjoyed it.
I recall when there used to be some recognition for the writers of the songs. When The New Seekers did "Beg Steal or Borrow", the writers were presented with a kind of trophy for winning the then equivalent of MYMU. I recall Mike Leander and Eddie Seago wrote the 2nd place song, "One By One".
In it's history, the Eurovision Song Contest has produced some very good songs. I even have a few in my collection. |
