Don't you think things are starting to change? Certainly on the album front UK females are selling well - Duffy has the biggest selling album in the UK this year, Amy and Leona the biggest two last year.
Below are worldwide album sales - I've taken the top 20 from 2006 releases, top 15 from 2007 and top 10 from 2008 - the further back an album released the more representative (and higher) the overall sales hence I've taken more albums as I went back.
There's plethora of female talent selling albums galore. In fact of the 45 albums list, more than half showcase female voices:

Amy Winehouse - Back To Black 9296000
Justin Timberlake - FutureSex/LoveSounds 8588000
Soundtrack - High School Musical 7700000
Nelly Furtado - Loose 7635000
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium 7186000
Pink - I'm Not Dead 5887000
Fergie - The Dutchess 5825000
