Every journalist and fan I spoke to in Belgrade felt it was a disgrace that UK only scored 14 points. I disagree. With televoting, people vote for their favourite song and what stood out about the UK entry to persuade many people across Europe to do that? It was not a Eurovision song, not a potential hit of any kind, and at best a decent album track. Yes, it was excellently performed, but why should someone in Albania pick up their phone and vote on that basis?
Block voting? Rubbish. Last year there were about 8 million votes. Do they all get together and decide which song to vote for? Remember there have been fourteen different winning countries in the last fourteen years and one of those was UK, when JK was in charge.
Between 1967 and 1977, UK were never out of the top four. Ireland won four times in the 1990's and one of their winners was an awful song. Nobody in Britain and Ireland were complaining then. Now the phase is for Eastern European nations to dominate, but that will change as everything always does. The only way it won't change is if the Western TV companies start pulling out in a fit of pique instead of putting some effort into thinking what it takes to win this contest. |

Whilst I agree about the song quality, it was performed very well by Andy Abraham and deserved far more than 14 points.
I did think Russia's entry was good, however, it did turn into a bit of a farce with the block voting.
Main reason Wogan was upset was that he gave Andy the wildcard to go through to the final of Song for Europe and backed it to the hilt. I still think that Michelle Gayle should have had the vote, as it was more Eurovision.
Don't expect Wogan to come back next year and Kevin Bishop is quitting as well, which means they will look for someone else. They won't come knocking at your door JK? |

I now see Eurovision as more of a showcase for music from European nations. The 'contest' part died for me a few years ago when the voting became farcical. Greece, Turkey and Cyprus have always voted for each other. The Scandinavians always vote for each other. Now the Baltics, former Yogoslavian and other Eastern states all vote for each other. The voting, for me, has become irrelevant. I pick out what I like and then see if I can find anything else by or about the writers and performers.
A few people I know only tune in to listen to Terry Wogan's commentary. |

Missed the show. The winning song is a 6/10 for me, whatever about the guy's star status. Maybe people simply voted for the guy they knew, given the apparent undistinctive song quality. Lots of those former Soviet countries are not entirely enamoured by Russia. |

His speech did sound rather like a "look, you guys carry on but don`t ask me to do it again" one. |
