I somehow overlooked your post, otherwise I'd have replied before. Of course there are diasporas but they don't outnumber the indigenous population. Ireland placed Latvia and Poland first and second, UK third. If UK had had a great song, it would have picked up the twelve. There are more Irish than Latvians and Poles in Ireland, more Germans than Turks in Gemany etc. All you need to do is put in a song which motivates people to vote for it. Simple as that.
I fully agree with your point on Bulgaria's 12 to that shambolic German disaster. Disgraceful, and it slashed a third off my winnings from my Germany to finish last bet. Grrrr... |

Firstly to solve something you have to look at the cause.
Take a look at the final scoreboard. It doesn't lie.

Lets see how many points the Western European countries gave to Russia
Uk scored Russia Zero
Ireland scored Russia 5 points
Sweden scored Russia Zero
Norway scored Russia 5 points
Denmark scored Russia zero
Iceland scored Russia zero
France scored Russia 1 point
Switzerland scored Russia Zero
Netherlands scored Russia 1 point
Belgium scored Russia 3 points
San Marino scored Russia zero
Germany scored Russia 7 points
Portugal scored Russia 6 points
Spain scored Russia 5 points
Andorra scored Russia 5 points
A total of 38 points from the 15 Western European countries doesn't suggest they thought very much of Dima Bilan at all and they actually place him a mere 14th, when you combine their votes.
In his semi final Dima finished only third, because Lithuania, Ukraine, Belarus and Latvia were not eligible to vote for him.
As for Ukraine:
UK scored Ukraine 5 points
Ireland scored Ukraine 6 points
Sweden scored Ukraine Zero
Norway scored Ukraine zero
Denmark scored Ukraine 7 points
Iceland scored Ukraine 5 points
France scored Ukraine zero
Switzerland scored Ukraine zero
Netherlands scored Ukraine zero
Belgium scored Ukraine 1 point
San Marino Ukraine zero
Germany scored Ukraine zero
Portugal scored Ukraine 12 points (they do every year thanks to the poorly paid Ukrainian labourers)
Spain Ukraine 7 points
Andorra scored Ukraine 6 points
So again not exactly a thumbs up from the west and not in the top ten from Western Europe
Ukraine and Russia, along with Serbia, Greece, Armenia and Turkey have vast diaspora in a lot of european countries. It is NOT neighbour vote it's diaspora and even Stevie Wonder could see that. Belgium, Netherlands, France and Germany have huge diaspora of Greeks, Turks and Armenians hence being the top 3 from those juries in all recent contests.So..

This is how UK can win under televoting
Get 6 known singers. 1 from Serbia, 1 from Armenia, 1 from Greece, 1 from Turkey, 1 from Russia and 1 from Ukraine.... form them into a group.
Do a tour of Europe to those countries with diaspora for the month before eurovision. (All of the Balkans, all of the Baltics, France, Belgium, Germany and Netherlands especially)
Look at Germany who shared last place with the UK. A disastrous, messy noise but one of the girls was Bulgarian and 12 of Germany's 14 votes came from...Bulgaria !
Oh and get JK to get the song as a dire, dismal, dreary and instantly forgetful song might only finish 2nd and at least he knows what to do. |
