Thanks everyone for explaining and interpreting the Bible.
You manage to convey it so much better than the god who wrote it.

"The sword" image is used by the writers of the Bible often when it is linked with truth. e.g The Sword of Truth - or cutting through to the heart of things.
Therefore to try and take a sentence out of context like that is like the GUARDIAN advert which used to be shown on TV/
JESUS throughout his teachings stressed love - and loving our neighbours AND our enemies. The Parables all followed this message.
There is nothing in the Gospels as far as I am concerned that suggests that Christians should wage war or fight with weapons. In fact the opposite is true if you read the texts.
The fact that some "organised religions" have killed in the name of God does not make it God's fault.
Each of you posting on here I could hold responsible for BLAIR's Wars which have killed over a MILLION people - yet it was not done in our name was it ? I certainly as a citizen of the UK disagree massively with waging war on Iraq etc.
Rubbishing Christianity as an evil and warmongering belief system is just plain wrong. Jesus asked his followers to love on many many occasions. That as JK points out is a pretty decent way to live and one that I think actually trumps any other belief system because if people actually followed his teachings then the World would be a better place. Jesus also asks us to forgive our enemies etc. - if forgiveness became part of our society rather than hatred and retribution ( which is what our MEDIA and what I call the NWO preach ) then we would all get on alot better.

If you seperate any sentence or phrase from the main message you can easily misinterpret. Jesus is talking there about using a 'symbolic' sword to clearly seperate his followers from the rest of the world. The sword represents division. He is saying that his followers must sever their links to the extent that they must put him first above all else, even before family. This will cause division within families and friendships, but is not an encouragement to take up arms or kill.
