it has nothing to do with backbone or how great lesley douglas is. This was a crime carried out on a pre-recorded programme that should have been edited a la Have i got news for you, ie by an experienced, intelligent editor.
This attack on Liberal society is an excuse to cover up wanton disregard for someone's privacy.
good riddance

I'm not really bothered how many people heard it or complained about it. The deed was a step across the line, as admitted by both Ross and Brand, but the only person who really deserved an apology is Andrew Sachs.
Beyond that, the BBC should be permitted to take whatever internal action they think appropriate.

in reality...
"Dear Listeners; we must apologise for not having any backbone. You pay your licence fee to us in return for us providing you with a variety of performers and radio shows, from the bland to the cutting edge. Just as we make sure that a minority sex education programme would not be used in a Sing Something Simple slot, so we ensure people like Jonathan Ross don't repeat silly humour and pranks from late night student comedy shows on Saturday morning programmes. However, the tabloids have printed jokes, which were intended for minority audiences, to their mainstream conservative readers and as we are terrified of them, we've had to fire people and apologise for something not only acceptable but approved of by the target audience. We have no backbone. We are sorry for that".
And Richard Allinson opened the show after the abject apology from a woman continuity announcer with Hungry Heart by Bruce - ex Controller Lesley Douglas's favourite artiste.
It's not generally known by the brain dead tabloid hacks that this is the presenters' way of quietly expressing solidarity with her. Just check how many Springsteen tracks start R2 shows at the moment.
