LOL, very good letter from Hunter Davies.
Have to say that a few people on this site accuse JK of blowing his own trumpet, but at least he has a right to, as he did create groups and made musicians (and I hear on the grapevine that is still involved with that).
Personally speaking I have no problem with that as a lot of people see a fine-line between arrogance and confidence and it is JK's own website. Most importantly it is fact and not fiction, which leading onto Clifford, to say he had a hand in creating the Beatles is taking the piss.
When McCartney won the Brits outstanding contribution in 2008, he certainly didn't thank Max Clifford.
I suppose his next claim will be that he discovered Elvis.

Yes Dixie, I suggested he should take him on.
No doubts about his ability, just about his veracity and morality.

Yet, JK, your very good friend and bail-bond provider, Simon Cowell seems very happy with his services?

One band Clifford DID work for for a while was Timebox in 1968. They weren't getting any hits or publicity so they hired Clifford. They later admitted they couldn't believe the bullshit Clifford was getting published about them.
Whilst the band were in London rehearsing, Clifford told the press that the band had been caught up in some riots in Paris. Of course they were nowhere near Paris at the time but it was, as drummer John Halsey said "just a load of bullshit to get us in the papers". But even Timebox felt that Clifford was stretching things beyond belief and soon dispensed with his services.
