Whether we like it or not, there is usually going to be somebody in Simons` position, the fact that is himself in it currently is only relevent in the short term.
But, as has been pointed out previously in this thread, this is still going to take some act to follow on it`s demise and will be a void that the public will want to be filled. The performers may well want more voice, but there will have to be a head at the front of it all to sort it all out, however biased or not he or she may seem.
Without a recognisable goal for our art form to achieve, we will have a world of commercial product akin to amateur dramatics.

I don't like the way it's gone either but neither do I like the way the world has gone.
Superficiality rules and stupidity reigns.
Justice gone; sense gone; great music smothered; celebrity glorified; retribution praised; minds narrowed.
But that's the way it is. Let's move on and improve things.

I don't like what the music business has become but Isn't it just a case of the music business evolving like every business should do? It was always a business and Businesses are supposed to make money. It Has got greedy though and only a small select few are making the real money off some really talented people. That's very sad. But what can we do other than accept it? As long as the paying public vote then the public will always get what they want...and the Simon cowells get richer. And programs like Personality Factor will continue...

It was NIGEL who brought the Pop Stars format from Australia to ITV. ( Nasty Nigel as he was once known )
An inspired move 10 years ago - but it has decimated the pop business. So yes - get your own TV show if you want to compete in the Top 10 regularly.
I agree with JK - we need to work together those of us who still believe in the UK music industry. We need to come together more and I have to say the attitude of the Major Labels is the sticking point. They have an "I'm alright Jack" attitude which means they dont get the support of the rest of the industry ( unless they hand over wads of cash ). This is unhealthy - a "house divided can't stand". The Majors should be the foundation of the industry and encourage the branches - but they dont.
That is sadly why many people are happy to see the majors fail - they see them as arrogant and out of touch. Even some who work in majors feel that way and certainly 10 years ago majors pretended they were "Godlike" in the industry. That illusion is now stripped away and they are living off the work done by people like JK in the 60s - 80s by exploiting the back cat. of major stars of those eras which comes with minimal costs.
