JC btw, I've never seen Kismet.
JC I quite like the movie. It starts off quite sweet and sickly but that's because it's a family musical rather than a gritty drama. As a kid I was won over by the final third when the family were under pressure from the Nazis. The movie turned a corner there and took on a whole new shape. Before that I had dismissed all musicals as naff and purely for girls.

Interesting Sci-Fi Fantasy trivia connection is that Angela Cartwright (Brigitta) went on to star in Lost In Space while Nicholas Hammond (Friedrich) became TV's Spiderman.
JK2006 OK three thoughts now it's over...

Far too sickly for me but Julie Andrews cannot help but be wonderful.
The scenery is fantastic - an area I know well, Bavaria - as regulars will know, Munich is my favourite German city.
And Rogers and Hammerstein are brilliant.
JK2006 Just felt it was not for me; strange, as I absolutely adored Kismet and The King And I and others but somehow...

anyway I'm watching it now and...

quite understand why I avoided it. It's abominably twee. So far (half way through) I much prefer The Sound of Silence.

Mind you - Climb Every Mountain... wow!
