Yes BR - lets be honest
the tradition of christianity and a lot of beliefs is one of intolerance. In this instance, the mayor concerned has offered everyone the opportunity to pray in the parlour, whatever their faith - a commendable and you could say 'christian' action.
As you say, everyone 'prays' in a way - some people call it hope, or a 'wishlist' - and some people have a philosophy and a practice that is their religion. And in all cases it boils down to an individuals attitude, prayer and ,yes, faith!
The problem arises when one person (or several) of a faith tries to convert another through force and when that doesnt suceed, then conflict ensues and misery prevails - therefore defeating the object of the original 'prayer' & 'faith. It bcomes a question of power, ego & greed, however theoretically worthy a belief is. And then you have to question whether the belief has any value.
As i say, I believe the value of a religion is in the behaviour of its practitioners, not just based on its tradition ie 'its been here so long it must be true!'
If you look at the article, the people doing the 'attacking' are the 'christians' (or should I say 'Conservatives'). The mayor hasn't banned prayer - just changed the dynamic and moved with the times - which most religions, by their nature dont, cant and wont do.
And your view on the existence of God may need a bit of elaborating on - 'the universe being large & cool' doesn't seem a strong enough argument for God's existence to me...
BR
Good points but lets be honest. The Prayers are about tradition in a country which is Christian and based on Christian values. Why should one person decide to end hundreds of years of tradition just because they personally have a beef about it.
I cant see anything wrong with Praying - all religions do it and even atheists do it when they are in a fix !! The Universe is so large and creation so cool - that it makes sense that there is a God to be fair. More evidence FOR a creator ( we exist for instance ) than no creator. Big bangs may happen but intelligent design is another thing.

And a lot of them judge people who don't agree with them as being unworthy or wrong - instead of embracing and transcending differences
