Subject: Ged Doherty Appointed Chairman & CEO, SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT, UK & Ireland
FROM: Tim Bowen
TO: SONY BMG Employees
DATE: June 30, 2006
It is a pleasure to have to announce since the Tipsheet has already leaked this that Ged Doherty has been appointed Chairman & CEO, SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT, UK & Ireland.
Ged, who will report directly to me, was previously President, Music Division, SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT UK and takes over from Rob Stringer who was last month appointed President, Sony Music Label Group, US.
Ged is the ideal person to take the company forward. He has great knowledge and a real feel for the future direction of our business. He also recognises and understands that artists need space and time to make their music as well as the level of guidance and direction that we can provide as a company to bring that music to the widest market. I wish him the greatest success in the future.
Ged's career has incorporated long spells at both BMG and Sony Music prior to the joint venture merger which gave rise to SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT in 2004. He most recently served as President, Music Division - a position and title he has held since April 2001 within BMG recognising the respective companies' focus on artists and music as well as his influence and success in that time.
Artists and projects within that tenure include, amongst many, Dido, Will Young, Pink, Natasha Bedingfield, Foo Fighters, Faithless, Maroon 5, Westlife, Eurythmics, John Legend and Kasabian. Recent successes in 2006 for the Columbia and RCA label groups, which Ged has overseen, include Kelly Clarkson, Shayne Ward, Editors, Primal Scream, The Zutons and Sandi Thom whose single and album both recently topped the charts.
Ged joined Sony Music in 1992 as Head of International Marketing in New York where he was closely involved with artists including, amongst many, Michael Jackson and Rage Against The Machine. He returned to the UK in 1996 as Managing Director, Columbia where he became hugely influential in the careers of UK and US artists such as Kula Shaker, Aerosmith, Destiny's Child, Mariah Carey and Ricky Martin. He then joined BMG in 1999 as Managing Director, Arista where he worked with artists including Whitney Houston, Santana and Usher.
Prior to working for Sony Music, Ged was an immensely successful manager overseeing the careers of Paul Young and Alison Moyet who collectively sold over 15 million albums globally. His earliest forays in the music business go back to his student days where he booked and promoted the legendary punk acts of that era prior to his arrival in London as a burgeoning booking agent.
Please join me in congratulating Ged, and in wishing him continued success in his new role and in congratulating the Tipsheet for being ahead of everyone as usual. |
