Chris Retro wrote:
It's a travesty what the BBC did with their pre-1977 TOTP archive. From 1971 all that exists is 14/1/71, 25/2/71, 1/7/71, 30/12/73 (all with mute links sadly) and 29/4/71, 17/6/71 & 27/12/71 - though, as black & white home recordings 2 shows from November & December of that year have been discovered in the late Bob Monkhouse's archive. 1972 fairs the worst, only 22/6/72 (not complete and discovered on a video in Scotland about 9 years ago), 16/11/72 & 28/12/72 survive. New stuff is, amazingly, coming to light all the time though. The majority of 2 July 1967 shows (including Pink Floyd, The Turtles & Dave Davies) were discovered in some rock stars collection (Ray Davies, I believe), most of 7/11/74 was found in Dick Emery's tape collection (and bear in mind he has been dead almost 28 years now!) & Lulu found a complete recording of a Fluff-hosted show from 6/3/69 (and all of her BBC1 1969 series too). A company called Kaleidoscope (based in Stourbridge) specialises in this kind of thing, and David Hamilton recently provided them with 3 or 4 "wiped" shows he hosted and recorded from 1976/77. The TOTP database is collated here: http://z6.invisionfree.com/popscene/index.php?act=idx
