And I still think my version of It Only Takes A Minute was far better than Take That's sad disco cover - though nowhere near as good as the Tavares original.
Interesting that my single (technically under the name One Hundred Ton and a Feather) sold 450,000 vinyl copies whereas Take That did only 85,000 - both reaching the top ten and similar chart positions; one was 15 years after the other.
Then again, the year my Lazybones made Number 23 on the chart, Tony Christie's Amarillo stalled at 18. Look what happened to Amarillo 35 years later |

Great songs will always cut through the bullshit.
You can only dupe the public with saturation marketing for so long if the song isn't good.
Take That always had songs with melody that you could sing. Something you don't see too often these days.
I hope they do sell a million by Christmas. That demographic mentioned is sorely undeserved, and Oh do I have a female singer for them. |

Very interesting observation, but don't forget the quality of the songs is key here. The remarkable sweep of 5 *'s from the critics for "Progress" indicate to the purchaser, real value where it matters in the grooves- a rarity these days. . Yes, the blanket TV appearances over the weekend helped but look what happened to Elton /Leon's album. They had fantastic promotional coverage and Elton worked his socks off. It sank like a stone because the public didn't like the new songs. This Take That album does have great songs and could sell a million before christmas. |
