It's the beginning of the end. HMV are neither a specialist any more nor a discounter. 60 shops to go this year. 100 will probably go next year, then the rump will be sold to whoever identifies a way to extract any remaining value.

Here is what Robert Swannell , chairman of both M&S and HMV, should do immediately. Put HMV concessions, similar to Harrods in the 100 biggest M&S Stores and stock the Top 30 albums and major catalogue releases by heritage acts. Take advantage of the huge foot fall and sell more records to the "Grey market"
