No; Alex is not sticking two fingers up at the majors (he's using Universal for physical distribution in the UK - Amazon abroad).
We are simply adapting our ways of reaching the public. Up to 500,000 views in a week on You Tube. |

Hmm well good luck JK with it all and I really mean that. However, many will argue that Alex has not got any real hits after all he sunk from the charts pretty quickly and it seemed that all his sales were via his fanbase. Personally I don't really care about that but you can't say he works because he has hits because as much as I like his material I don't think they are genuine hits. He works because he has a great fanbase, built up from his blogging (non music).
Also, 100,000 is about the average numbers for an internet driven "hit" record. Alexa Goddard, Rebecca Black and Pomplamoose have all sold roughly the same amount. It is still a decent amount to sell but Alex strategy (similar to PWL) is to stick 2 fingers at the majors and storm the charts at will.
I do agree that if you have a real hit then you can break it without the traditional media to a point. Chicken and egg theory because with a hit the media will jump on board at some point and help boost the views and sales. I do think that the new model works fairly simply and with the right song, you will see results.
For me the new model means you control your own marketing but you don't need lots of money to break it. The new model is risk free, as long as you know when to back it or pull the plug if it is not working. It uses a monetised marketing plan. It really is simple and that's what confuses people. It seems to good to be true. Also there is a way to break a hit without a fanbase like Alex's. For that you really need a genuine hit. |

Alex will be signing dodos too. |

You're right about Universal Terrylamps, my bad, PIAS? but then again they have the Sony link too I think. However, I don't think it's unprecedented to do the physical only as Universal have always done that through smaller distribution channels. Universal have been the easiest major to do distribution with as far as i can remember. Before them it was BMG (early 90s) but I do like the way Alex is doing it. Not sure if he is doing a p&d with them but with Universal doing the sales then there is less chance of you getting any returns but you have to be damn sure about that. But is anyone buying physical CDs? JK why no vinyl? I know here in Australia you have more of a chance of finding the dodo than getting anyone to buy a physical CD. |

It is an unprecedented deal as it's for physical only and a direct deal. Also regarding Absolute, who I do a lot of business with, their physical distribution is through Universal anyway, so it wouldn't be any more 'indie' by going through them. |
