Ah but GG - the talent can still be there; it just needs nurturing.
I think you'll be impressed by young Alex Day's new offerings; his Good Morning Sunshine is a terrific seasonal song, influenced by my generation but entirely his own.
I was lucky enough to "help" the Bee Gees twice; in their early days I was their first (outside Australia) and biggest supporter during the transition from Ossie Byrne to Robert Stigwood. As a "thank you" to me (you should read some of my columns from then) they wrote me a song - I Started A Joke. But Robert (wisely) thought it was so good that during the time I took driving over to hear it, he banned them from giving it away and insisted Robin sing it.
Secondly, when No Limits was on the air in the 80s (at which time the Bee Gees - ex Disco - were very "uncool") I heard and adored You Win Again and made it a huge Power Play despite everyone else hating it. They thanked me again personally... "JK you are always there for us".
I was. For one reason. They were great.

I am enormously saddened to hear the news of what we all knew might come. I met Robin when I first started making headway in the music business in my twenties, as we were staying at the same hotel in NYC. I did something that I rarely ever do or ever did, I got starstruck. It was Robin Gibb! He was very real and generous and that started to teach me that even the biggest stars in the world are just like everyone else. A valuable lesson at the time for a young producer in training.
The Bee Gees had phenomenal songs and arrangements that took real musicians playing real instruments with real talent to make happen.
Pumpkinhead...I don't know that they will be influencing young singer songwriters, because to achieve what the Bee Gees did took so much work that kids today just aren't willing to put in to get great.
People actually think Bieber has talent! No he has Youtube and Usher's millions hyping him. Perception is reality in 2012 says Madison Avenue!!!!!
Does anyone think a young band could write "Fanny" for 2012?????
I seriously doubt it!

This might not be the best Bee Gees song .. but it's my favourite.

PH - if we ever meet, you'll say the same about me. Lynn Barber, a dear friend, called me an egocentric bore last month.
I had dinner with Gambo last week.
He couldn't get a word in.

Robin Gibb was a musical icon. It's a sad event but the world has his music to remember him by, and I've no doubt he will inspire more young singer/songwriters to carry the music forward.
Watching the news ... I'm sure Paul Gambaccini is a nice guy but I wish he would stop for breath once in a while.
