Jim was the lead singer with homegrown Northern Soul act Wigan's Ovation, who'd had a hit the year before with "Ski-ing In The Snow" during the short Northern Soul boom. One side product of that boom was a roaring trade in quickie re-recordings of otherwise impossible-to-get-hold-of soul singles, and faux-soul covers, a specialty of Spark Records (Jim's label), which included Ruth Swann's (actually pretty decent) version of Tainted Love. All that said, I've never heard this cover of Unchained Melody, but I'd be 99% sure it'll be a stomping soul version of the song... |

Having dug out that chart. I see your version sold a little less than 3000 copies to get to #55. Before being withdrawn at your request. And a bit lower down (at #60) was some fella called Jim McClusky with a version of "Unchained Melody". I haven't a clue, who he was. Maybe someone does? |

I actually bought your version JK. Even remember the record number UK 146 & it appeared at #55 at the start of August 1976. I wonder why it disappeared, the following week. The Pussycat version was released on Friday 6th Aug 76 & I think your version, was released on 23rd July.
Though to be critical, it wasn't up to the great production of "It Only Takes A Minute". That was far superior to the Tavares version, which was a bit, too tame I thought. |

Rather sad to see that the track at No19, which got there because I withdrew my more successful cover because (rightly) I was accused of chart hype, sold almost a million.
I could have done with those royalties! |

Or was he, another victim of exaggeration/exploition by media or pay offs...And I wonder the scenario if he'd been an American. Would he of been found not guilty, like a certain other famous singer was? |
