I think JK has consistently taken the eminently admirable position that it is irrelevant whether the accused is/was deemed good or bad or amiable or unpleasant. The point to focus on is: are they being treated fairly or not? So this strange compulsion to claim that Savile was 'loved' is really a distraction (and citing the popularity of the shows he was in is hardly a help, otherwise we'd have to hail Huw Edwards as universally loved, not to mention the likes of Nick Knowles, Jim Davidson and Bernard Manning). Worse still, it suggests a lack of confidence in arguing purely in terms of fairness. |

Well it's all a matter of opinion, innit? I think that millions did, indeed, adore Sir Jimmy; and it might have been because he raised millions for charity (fact), saved hundreds of lives (fact), made many miserable people smile (fact) and was silly, over-the-top, eccentric and superficial. Not my cup of tea, not yours and not for millions of others but indisputably more loved that most people.
Was he also a pervert? We shall probably never know. Was his following exaggerated? Probably - isn't that the point of media? The truth is usually a grey area in the middle but a good story needs to be one extreme of the other. |

And still no attempt to justify the stupid exaggeration. |

12 million listeners tuned in to hear his Radio One show, every Sunday & he wasn't loved by millions! A damn sight more listeners than Wogan ever got, for his Radio 2 clique. Wogan? A man that certainly could not be touched. He was always up the BBC bosses backside. A complete creep arse. Can't stand them.
I think the various incarnations of Hedda Booze/Hyram etc etc want a complete breakdown and list of each of those millions of Savile lovers...or perhaps they simply are bent on an anti-hedda crusade which is terribly exciting for me but probably rather dull for others.
especially when ITK does it so much better. |
