She seems to have her own family abuse story. The articles below, apparently based on interviews with her, vary about how many charges were faced and how much time was served. Do you know if there are any independent records on the case (e.g. to show that it happened)?
Her father-in-law Alexander Johnston, it turned out, had been abusing young girls in the family for 40 years, pleading guilty to 19 offences and serving 15 months of a three-year jail sentence. He still lives in New Zealand with his wife, Ians stepmother Flo, though Hetty and Ian have cut contact with them.

Alec johnston pleaded guilty to 22 counts of indecent assault and was sentenced to 4 years in prison. He was released after two years.

I think, in the original interview he showed a lack of understanding about how helpless children feel when they are abused, but showed compassion to the man and gave him some damned good advice.
He also made a very valid point about children fighting back. If we give them the impression that they are helpless victims we put them at risk. However difficult it is, they do need to
be taught to fight back if they can and to yell, scream and tell someone about it, and the more confident we can make our children the safer they will be.
The current campaign to teach children to protect themselves seems to stop short of this. |
