The Cat Dork? Is that some new intellectual term?
martin Yes, it was the Annual Ball we played at, two years back, fantastic food, and at 3 am a fantastic breakfast as well, we had just arrived home, when a different agent friend of mine called, to the one we were working for the night before and asked if we could work for him tonight.
I said no as we were tired, he said "you will want to do this one it`s the SAS annual ball mate!"
So secretive they hadn`t told anybody we had just played it!
In The Know Martin

I met David Stirling once (the founder of the SAS). I was taken to visit him by a member of the regiment. He was quite old even then (and I'm sure he's passed away since).

Here's another amusing army story. I've attended the annual dinner at the Cavalry Club a few times (as a guest). It's usually officers only on the friday and guests are welcome on the saturday.

Back in 1973 I was the guest of a member of the Queens Dragoon Guards (a major). Also in the regiment was Mark Philips (a captain) - who had married Princess Anne earlier that year.

During that evening we were going upstairs and Mark Philips was on his way down. He stopped to chat to my host (and saluted him - captains salute majors) and the conversation was quite general. After we parted and had gone a few more steps, my friend (always quite eccentic) turned to Mark and said "by the way - I hear you've got married. Congratulations!"

Mark looked at me in astonishment - and I just shrugged my shoulders. Everyone in the world had been aware of the marriage but my friend just mentioned it as if it was some piece of gossip that he'd heard in passing.

Another year I arrived on the Saturday after noon in London and checked into my hotel - ready for the evening dinner. On unpacking I realised that I had forgotten to bring a tie ! I rushed out to try and buy one but that's not easy in central London late on a saturday afternoon.

A little while later my host rang the hotel to see if I had arrived OK. I explained my predicament and he said he could solve the problem - I could wear His SAS tie - as he would be wearing his regimental one that evening ! So .... I spent an evening at the Cavalry Club wearing an SAS tie !
