Whilst you were incommunicado, JK, someone posted a video of your appearance on a chat show – possibly Aspel – in which you talked about the collective influence and power of the media. I thought you made a very good point about the subtle or indirect effect of the media as a whole, rather than the agenda of individual outlets or proprietors.
I've been picking up quite a lot of British and American drama over the last couple of years and it seems that every police/detective drama must be built around child abuse. It seems it's not just the ultimate crime, but almost the only crime. Watching from afar, it's really very funny...or it would be, if I didn't wish to return one day to a country with rule of law and the presumption of innocence.
Perhaps we need a few dramas in which corrupt journalists, police, and lawyers are convicted of something really nasty...like perverting the course of justice. |

about all those wicked Catholic priests - they know, you know and I know there are just as many predatory paedos in the media as in the Church or sport or teaching or doctors - but they are less worthy of prosecution (fewer headlines). And bent cops and lawyers. But who wants to read about them? |
