It is interesting to know how they arrived at that figure, but it was negotiated through The claims conference, which administers compensation for Holocaust survivors, so it is bound to be viewed as compensation, even if technically not.
Almost all of the people who have contributed to the "token sum" have had nothing to do with the atrocity.
Neither have any of the government.
Why do we apologise and give money for things that were not our fault?
The way I see it, money as an apology is vulgar, and trivialises the harm caused. |

Can you not see - the small sums of money are irrelevant?
You can recognise suffering in other ways than money.
I dont understand the modern way of giving money as a token of sympathy. (such as the 80 thousand donated to the Chester zoo fire. Why? Don't they have insurance?  )
Besides, who doesn't already recognise the suffering? What exactly will it change? |
