Very interesting. I wonder how often statisticians are called as expert witnesses in cases like that.
I've often wondered whether statistics might play a role in accusations of abuse, e.g. what the probability is of accusers failing to report crimes against them for years and be telling the truth versus the probability of them making a false claim for compensation.

a fascinating article which brings to mind the brilliant JK song about Harold Shipman (should have been Number One )
There have been a few of these trials of nurses apparently killing patients but all seem to really have no physical evidence apart from the "balance of probabilities".
In the past this would have been "doubt" which under (once great British law) meant a finding of Not Guilty.
## as an aside- If I knew Dr Shipman or indeed any other doctor was administering a lovely (fatal) dose of Morphine as I was just too old and feeble I would be lining up and pushing whatever other bloody pensioners were in the queue in front of me.
Morphine is a very depressing drug. I've had twice after knee replacements (still have beautiful legs though) and it's a great painkiller but a nightmare after a while. Pity those poor ex-service persons after WW1 & WW2 who became hooked on it.
### I have asked (in my will) that if possible I am happy to be made into Soylent Green and fed to OAPs or even distributed in a Food Bank..or if possible laid out on a mountain somewhere so the birds (Vultures) can dine off me for a very long time.
Ben Geen was caught red-handed – a serial killer, or so it seemed. In the third of his series The Justice Trap, Jon Robins shows how a misreading of statistics led to a life sentence
