Oof, that is a long article, but is indeed interesting. Refreshing to see that it was written by a woman and that she hasn't indulged in criticism of feminism per se. How disturbing that some should even consider it credible that a woman saying "yes" actually means "no". It sounds to me as if this guy's former sexual partners have behaved dishonestly and dishonourably. Strange that the concept of being a "gentleman" comprises the idea of "a man whose conduct conforms to a high standard of propriety or correct behaviour" (Merriam-Webster), which I'd consider "honourable" behaviour, while that of being a "lady" doesn't. If one accepts that sex before marriage and having multiple sexual partners are no longer generally perceived as "immoral" in the modern day and that women are as entitled to engage in it as men, perhaps it is now considered acceptable as "propriety and correct behaviour" by "gentlemen", but I wonder to what extent people from social groups/communities which consider such behaviour immoral, or whose own sense of morality dictates this, are as affected by false allegations as those who do not. On the other hand, representatives of religious orders and church clerics don't exactly seem to have been immune. |
