Topic History of: Wonderful night in the theatre last night

Haven't seen Anthony Andrews for years. Not unless you count my endless re-watches of Brideshead, which is still the best drama that has ever been screened on television, in my view. I'd love to see Dame Diana Rigg on stage, my favourite actress. I haven't been to the theatre in ten years. Shame on me! Glad you enjoyed the night Jonathan. |

By the way, as an interesting aside, I noticed that the audience was 80% older than me and, to my surprise, mainly British. Likewise when I collected my car afterwards, the numerous elderly couples clutching programmes from other shows were all British too (accents and car number plates).
It seems the older types have reached retirement with cash to spend and appreciate good plays (my neighbours had been to The 39 Steps the night before and raved about it) and are willing to fork out and have a great night.
Back to The Letter - it HAD to be a great plot with great characters 80 years ago as sets were simply static. Now, of course, the sets are far more interesting (they are very clever for The Letter) and adding that visual to the mix, it is a terrific evening, far better than TV.
I can and do thoroughly recommend it.

I went to Somerset Maugham's The Letter at the beautiful Wyndham's Theatre last night.
Fabulous, old fashioned, traditional, plot and character rich play. The place was packed - not one empty seat. Anthony Andrews (old friend from 40 years ago) and Jenny Seagrove (isn't she gorgeous?) and you could have heard a pin drop.
Hadn't been to the theatre in 10 years and absolutely loved it. |
