Rick Max Weber had it right, just over a century ago. He pointed out that people will have to decide if they want accountable amateurs to govern, or unaccountable experts.

Most of us choose accountable amateurs, politicians, but the problem with that is evident especally now. An accountable amateur knows zero about the nature of a virus and how to deal with it. So he or she has to be guided by experts.

But the experts don't agree with each other. So the amateur has to gamble to an extent.

And if it transpires that the amateur's gamble didn't come off, the media and public get angry. But in these circumstances the public don't know any better than their amateur leaders.

So I'm inclined to resist joining in the pompous public tut-tutting when a politician gets a cold or changes his or her mind.

And the childish celebration when someome you don't like gets tested positive - well, it reminds me why I hate the Guardianistas so much: alway preaching 'be kind' while spewing hatred right and centre.
Oncle Jimmy Now then yong man, as it 'appens yer hardly "ordinary" with yer soft southern jessie Charthouse/Oxbridge education and vintage roller collection - not too dissimilar form that soft southern jessie they call prime minister. Goodness gracious, when I were a lad we lived in cardboard box by motorway and got up an hour before went to bed! A sore throat and a few sniffles never got in the way of a hard day's graft down at colliery. By jove, what a world ...

Yours JS from t'other side as it 'appens, ughhh, urghh, puff, puff
robbiex I accept the fact that the PM should be tested at this time, as he needs to get back to work as soon as possible. He just should have made it clear that tests are also available for those in government and even back bench mps (Nadine Norris).
Honey All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others.
JK2006 It has been widely stated that only those rushed to hospital were being tested. Then it grew into all NHS staff. Now we see certain people like the PM and Prince Charles get tested. But still "ordinary people" like us are told tests are not available.
