Admiral I would say that muzak in the chemist is not sufficient to mask "private" conversations; not possible in a public place.
KFC coffee can't be any more awful than the mini mart coffee you had. KFC has really gone down hill in the recent years.

Muzak has its place though in restaurants and pharmacies, where the conversations are often confidential. It's now a worldwide phenomenon, and is seen as a reasonable compromise.
Some voices can carry considerable distances and many public places and shops aren't designed to curtail this type of broadcasting. Frequently the opposite.

I would love music banned everywhere.
At my local supermarket they blare out 1970s disco and pop crap. Who the fuck wants to listen to the Nolan's or ABC by Jackson 5 whilst navigating a maze of aisles? Unless they want to kill people with the silent killer called stress. I wouldn't put it by pass the corporation to do that.
ABBA songs really does piss me off especially near Christmas and New Year's Day celebrations. Fairytale in New York causes nothing but rows or boredom. I'm sure Pogues are cursed.
