Wyot Always enjoyed it as well. I get tired of UK Police programmes and Scandi Noir (as well done as many are) that just try and "out shock" you or strive for the most clever (but ridiculous) motives. Montalbano in contrast has a gently comic, querky take but on serious themes amidst light-hearted sub plots. Can't think of a UK equivalent; and as you say gloriously beautiful to watch- and you should visit Sicily, it is stunning.
JK2006 Regulars here know I'm a huge Montalbano fan; from the very beginning. It's beautiful to look at (I must visit Sicily) but it also has terrific actors, is well written, is beautifully put together and has a fabulous;ous backstory (Young Montalbano is wonderful too). It touches on really important things that no other TV series covers.
