Mr Flintstone Aye. We would have no Beethoven (Awful to servants apparently), no Dostoevsky (Time in jail), no Tolstoy (Anarchist) etc. You can't pretend things don't exist because their creator wasn't a perfect person. It is nonsense.

The same with the push to tear down leaders such as Churchill. Was he perfect and did he behave perfectly throughout his life, holding perfect views? Heck no! Was he a hero in a lot of ways? Heck yes! One does not exclude the other!
Wyot Yes culture is in real danger too. Aren't the most interesting people flawed, and artists the most interesting people?

I dread that any artists start sanitising their characters or paintings to make them all "woke". Won't be any novels or films worth taking a second look at.....
Mr Flintstone Whatever your broad political views there is now a new distinction between those of us who believe that discrimination based on colour, sexuality or gender should be resisted, and those who seek to muzzle those who disagree (or use violence), re write history and contort reality.

For me, gay marriage is a thing to be celebrated, a man wishing to do all he can to live life identifying as female is fine by me. Good luck to him. And I am quite happy to call them "her" if it improves her quality of life.

But claiming that a man who has an operation is biologically female is an absurdity against science and leads to fundamental rights earned by women over centuries being casually overturned.

Aye ideally people would treat each other better.

I worry it robs us culturally as well. If you look at the life events of some artists and authors even a hundred years ago they were quite fruity. In trouble with the law, lots of extra-marital sex and affairs with both genders, social gaffes and drama etc. but in my opinion we'd be poorer as a society if their work had been cancelled. They wouldn't last very long in 2020.

I suppose I believe that you can value the art but not necessarily agree with every aspect of the artists life, which seems obvious really but I feel it has been lost.
Wyot I agree Flintstone it pervades life now and is poisonous.

Interestingly, you may want to check out Lawrence Fox, who has just set up a political party specifically to take on this madness...
Mr Flintstone I agree but feel the "cancel culture" problem is similar across the political spectrum. I recall a chap at a previous employer who was vilified in hushed gossipy whispers because he supported UKIP (Farage was leader at the time) and therefore was presumed to be a racist.

I don't see how this can be fixed though as there is legislation underpinning some of it (Equality Act, Hate Crimes etc.) and no political party ever repeals legislation (or at least I can't recall a recent example) or can resist getting their sticky fingers on more powers.
