Mart Richard used to have appearances of that sort at the 12 Bar club, I`m not sure if he still does.
I go to the odd one down here myself, but I must say although it is has very creative appeal, I feel a lot more insecure about a line up of free, and in many cases good music, than I do about wealthier people giving their`s away in a paper, which of course is the topic of the day.
Look out for themed open mic nights, I was invited down to one last year and as they nicely asked, I went.

I was the only non rap act on! Quite an experience!
zooloo One that used to be quite was Storm 28 in Leicester Square.

Two things... it's been a while since I've been and I may have the venue name wrong.

They're Leicester Square, a cafe-bar.
Pete Clarke Thanks in advance.

Adios,
Pete
