The same effect could be achieved by making fresh unadulterated food cheaper.

A salt and sugar tax won't stop people eating salty and sugary food. It won't drive people to salads, just to being more skint, and so more depressed and more in need of a sugar high! Just inform people and let them choose for God's sake...
I have never known one smoker cite cost as the main reason they quit. They moan about cost, but not hitting an early grave is their main goal...

I don't see point buying salt, most foods already have it anyway.

Since my perfect meal is a plate piled with salt lightly sprinkled with other food, I'm not in favour of taxing stuff.
