hedda How The Media Works #99

Amazed how someone like Peter Saunders can go so far..at the height of his power he was interviewed by the Australian '60 Minutes" where he claimed Cardinal George Pell (enjoying well earned retirement in a Vatican apartment).."is a psychopath" (while never having the met the man)

It resonated throughout the Australian media and became front page news, TV news and so on.

And when Saunders fell from grace ? Not a word. Not a peep from the Australian media.

I went to a few functions Cardinal Pell was a guest at..a giant of a man and a strict Conservative..but an old fashioned one..not a raving right winger.

I have new respect for him. Whatever you believe about religion I think he used his religion to support himself through his ordeal and believe one day he would be vindicated.

Rarely mentioned as the Australian media loves to crucify the Catholic Church(the fierce divisions in Oz society during the 1800s seem to persist where the Church Of England and Anglicans were basically the establishment and the slightly smaller Catholics tended to be the working classes from Ireland & the UK) is the 1000s of parishioners who supported Pell (including his extended family) and who set up fund raising ventures to pay for his legal bills.

Ordinary folk who resisted the call to condemn him.

## Notable that the "left wing" Pope was and remains a Pell supporter. Apparently friends for decades even though they had differing views.
JK2006 As they release the report revealing religious organisations swept perpetrators under the carpet, let's not forget that's exactly what the IICSA did when it emerged that their key "survivor" member had abused vulnerable victims and if there were other staff using the IICSA as a honey pot to attract the vulnerable no doubt they, too, would be treated as Peter Saunders (NAPAC) was.

Why is it these expensive inquiries never look at the equally prevalent area of False Allegations? When I offered to give evidence, they refused to hear it. I suppose it's impossible that people (even children) lie. I suppose it's impossible that some cases are protecting innocent church members from malicious, greedy compensation seekers or rejected stalkers or any of the other criminals like Carl Beech or Jemma Beale, the tip of the iceberg. I reckon for every truly abused person there's a false accuser. Or are they, as Peter Saunders (NAPAC & IICSA) used to say - "vanishingly rare"?
