I had access to a secretly recorded tape of a Masonic meeting in about 1980, and absolutely nothing of interest happened.

I am intrigued to know what's on the tape.

Was there a sing-song and discussions about trouser legs and handshakes ?

I really don't remember, it was so long ago and so boring. Fundraising and listed buildings mostly.

Sounds about right.

When I used to live in Winchester I had a friend who - every year or so - would part company with his wits in an identical manner.

These episodes originated with him staring intently into my eyes and demanding to know if I was a mason? I would answer "no" every year and this seemed to largely settle him so far as I was concerned.

The local Police station and personnel weren't so lucky, however. A few days before Simon (name changed) disappeared for some weeks for "a well earned rest" - he would stand night & day out front of the Police station hurling masonic abuse and threats.

The Police were actually very kind & patient with him.

Not every copper is a Mason. I do know that some of the Masons who hired out my Function Room were actually insurance brokers and 2 of them actually worked at the local boot menders. A) I use to see the duo I went to their shop to get my cowboys mended or get my key cuts The duo would be the first the first to arrive in suits and hats.

I have zero idea what was discussed by drinks had to be left outside the door at a certain time and we had to knock 3 times to say 'drinks are ready'.

The can't be that secret because Masonic Halls are clearly marked in any town or city. Even the one in Hico, Texas is clearly labelled and near the main restaurant's. It was an old cinema, Wyot.
