Fatherless families are a problem also, you always see the mother defending their offspring but never the Dad.
Also there needs to be proper employment when kids leave school. Uni and college don't cut it for me.
I have interviewed and hired people with fancy degrees and letters after their name who ended up pulling pints in my pubs.
Also the government is setting up another back to work scheme. This is when employers get an influx of CVs and spec letters from people who have been unemployed. Who doing it for the Job Centre not for themselves, most CVs tend up in the trash.
I did time in the early 90s all because I hired a dodgy accountant who then fucked off ! Leaving me with the consequences.
I had regulars in my pub who were ex prisoners. They said prison is now too easy they play pool, chess, watch TV etc.
It's only rough if you make it that. If you go in and throwing your weight around and acting tough you will be put in your place!
Also other prisoners test other prisoners to see what they can get from you.
Always fight for TV and do the ridiculous course's the prison puts on.
Would youth clubs work these days ? They were scrapped due to costs but the tax payers shouldn't pay for everything. Even most comic shops do open table-top games.
If people want youth clubs get the community to fund them and find volunteers with great leadership and knows how to be a mentor.
Another thing that bugs me is that parent's want to be friends with their kids (the cool mum or dad) not actual parents who do discipline.
When I was a kid if I did something wrong. I got an earful from both set of parents then a flick ear soon followed or slap on the back of the legs. I never did it again.
When I was 16 I moved to USA and learned from the University of Life. My uncle found me a job over there in little tavern. I rented the room the above which had a couple of mice, tiny windows and own bathroom. The rent was taking out of my wages.
I knew that I had to work after to get a better job and place to live. After a few years, a group of friends and I, threw whatever we had to move to Canada and start our own club.
Sadly I sold my share far too cheaply looking back. Being young and seeing what I thought was a nice form, on a form it did look good to the laymen.
However every decision I made in North America was down to me. No hand outs or calling my parents asking for money.
When I saw a nice country pub up for the grabs. I took it and used pretty much all money I made in Canada.
When my maths teacher came in for an evening drink, as I was doing all the legal paperwork for the taxman that's when all the shit started.
My teacher thought he was being clever acting as my accountant with forms having more discrprinces than a sci-fi novel. I couldn't prove that he did the tax returns etc. Nor could my solicitors. |

Thoughtful piece by Nick Cohen in yesterday's Guardian on the inhumane UK prison system:

We really need to keep prison for the truly dangerous, I think. And then improve their conditions. |
