Why should voting be compulsory ? It should be the right of the public to decide if the government tossers are worth the walk or drive to the polling Station. |

it works better in Australia (but certainly not perfect ) for several reasons..
1 the government finances elections and parties do not have to rely on private money.
2. strict proportional representation overseen by legislation and a partisan Electoral Commission (no politician has complained in 100 years)
3.preferential voting where you put your preference numbering downwards..lots of horse trading goes on but elected governments largely reflect what the majority want at that time.
4. 3 year cycles..they do their worst in the first, coast along in the second and dish out bribes in the third. Not enough time to do real damage.
5. Compulsory voting always gets out over 90% of electorate
6. A powerful elected Upper House |

It's a huge subject of it's own - partly from Greek origins. Many countries have different types, like the US - and even those which make up the British Isles.
Proportional Representation is thought to be, perhaps, the fairest and most appropriate for the modern world.
But - hung parliaments are virtually inevitable when the method is used. Where voters rank their preferred candidates (Preferences).

In a time of uncertainty and flux I am reassured that, half a decade ago, our poster of many names but few opinions was busy educating us under one of his (he is definitely a man...) many guises.
Made me smile. |
