Low hanging fruit.
On an individual level to signal "goodness" (much harder to do if nuance is admitted so none of that sort of thing please...) on a political level to demonstrate manufactured efficacy: this we ARE doing for you. Feeding your media aroused addiction for moral outrage. Now back to watching Netflix please... |

Thank you Rick; I think that's one reason why my very existence so infuriates many. The entire fiasco hasn't affected me one iota. Except in areas where the majority think it OUGHT to have done (making money - I've lost about 50 million thanks to Surrey Police ably assisted by Max Clifford). Who cares? Only the people I would have used that money to help (music makers, music lovers, innocent victims of false accusers). Getting public attention? I put online sites and links in place before it happened in 2000. OK - many fewer now tune in for my thoughts. But does it really matter? They can always get Gambo to pontificate when Bobby Rydell passes, instead of JK. |

It's so cynically hypocritical. Do people REALLY care if people stuck in offices all day every day during incredibly tense times have a drink so long as they get us back to work? I say that as someone who wouldn't vote Tory ever. Churchill drank champagne and port while the nation was on rationing - would it have been better if some meek teetotaller had been running the war effort?
What I especially don't get is this weird culture of revenge. What do people actually WANT from punishing public figures? The basic argument seems to be, 'We suffered, they didn't, so we need to see them suffer now'. Why? I genuinely don't get what the positive is.
I lost someone during lockdown and it's left me shattered. Utterly shattered. Did the news that a few officials broke the rules anger me? A bit, but it didn't surprise me one iota. They ALWAYS break the rules. Always have, always will. And more importantly, whatever they 'do' to these officials - fine them, sack them, lock them up, execute them, whatever - won't help me and anyone like me in any way. No one can 'make up for' the loss. ('You've suffered an emotional loss? Oh dear. We've calculated that a lump sum of £20,000, plus an hour throwing tomatoes at someone in the stocks, ought to boost your happiness levels back to their previous position. Thanks for calling!') I'd rather just move on. But there's this obsessive 'pound of flesh' mentality that seems dominant today. Do they even know themselves why they're so determined?
It sometimes seems as though they crave an almost medieval form of retribution. Look at Rolf Harris. Okay, rightly or wrongly, he was found guilty. But he did his time. His career was destroyed. His life is almost over. But it's as though the mob still aren't satisfied. 'He was seen walking down a street??? How DARE he??' What do they want - a public stoning?' Woody Allen has not been ruled guilty of anything, but a small group have still destroyed his reputation, wiped out his career, blocked almost every outlet for him, and yet STILL they seem to find his mere existence intolerable. It's as if they wake up thinking, 'Damn it, he might actually be SMILING somewhere today. We must DO something!'
Ultimately it's an infantile response. Make sure that mistakes aren't made again? A very good ambition. Devote months or even years to exacting 'revenge' on these people? What the hell for?? |

This whole stupid "PartyGate" thing fizzles on ("Oh God, Ukraine has lost interest; find something else quickly"). Who cares? Only media (good story). And gullibles. If everyone getting a speeding or parking fine had to resign from their jobs, the country would be unemployed. Yet the dozens of things seriously wrong with society (and humanity) rumble on. Rohingya. Libya. Hong Kong. Syria. Yemen. Nobody cares because they are not "good stories". Bah humbug.
Sky News were all for support for Hong Kong citizens, then it went silent same with the BBC.
I guess they don't like strong, willed people who stand up to their own cruel government. |
