JK2006 If a celebrity is officially charged and media (who can blame them?) run with "a great story", be prepared for dozens - nay, HUNDREDS - of further claims to be made of which a tiny handful (5 in my case) will be far more likely to get GUILTY verdicts from jurors (usually prone to fine, rehearsed acting and remember - even non-actors get coached in how and when to break down sobbing on the stand) than the starter ones, which often get conveniently dropped when better actors... oops, "victims"... emerge.

Sorry to be cynical but I've seen this many times; sometimes from the dock.
JK2006 Well spotted Hedda and is actually most important. If the LAW now forbids calling rape RAPE, we are in a pretty pickle.
hedda likewise I haven't a clue about Spacey's life except I admire him as an actor.

But this sounds a bizarre charge : "causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent."

I can't figure it out.

Odd this comes just as he re-ignites his career at Cannes.
JK2006 Let me be clear - I know nothing about Spacey other than what I've read or heard.
But let's remember certain general points.
1) Police use celebrity status in media to publicise claims, be they false or true. As a result both genuine victims and false accusers will be prompted to come forward; some for genuine closure, some for financial reasons, some for sympathy or fame.
2) Ditto wealthy people (and all famous people are - often wrongly - assumed to be rich).
3) There is nothing wrong with that as long as police then proceed to investigate with equal attention to both possibilities.
4) If claims are found to be false or not provable, police should then investigate whether those are deliberate and look to find the motive, in case a different crime has been committed, from Conspiracy to Pervert to Wasting Police Time.
5) Such investigations MUST be competent at least; thorough and honest. Bad policing should be prosecuted.
JK2006 Historical allegations; let's see how it plays out in court.
