Concerning that so few criminal defence barristers starting out can actually earn a living. I hadn't realised it was that bad. With a law degree they can of course move to a range of well-paid alternatives.
The concern is the rest of us: we lose, should we need it, access to justice, due process and a fair trial because the odds are so stacked against us...

One of the best things that ever happened to me was being wrongly convicted and sent to prison for seven years. I learned so much and was able to make literally hundreds of unhappy men less miserable (I prevented dozens of suicides and actually got 12 appeals granted and released). Instead of becoming global chairman of EMI at £5million a year, it was less financially profitable (who needs it?) but FAR more satisfying. And it's why this post reads so true to me. I met the victims of our broken system. I spoke to them; heard them and often helped them. A much better career for my old age than recording Una Paloma Blanca for the masses.
