The UK ancient 'first-past-the-post' electoral system allows parties to win seat majorities without winning the proportional popular vote.
FPTP is a simple but disproportionate electoral system and has been used to elect the House of Commons of England and its successors for Great Britain and the U.K. since the Middle Ages. Its use extends to former British colonies, most notably the United States, Canada, and India.
Electoral reformers point out other flaws such as no penalty for not voting while non-return of a UK Census Form is punishable by a £1000 fine. Plus, FPTP vulnerability to corrupt gerrymandering creates districts that distort overall representation.
Throughout the 20th century many countries that previously used 'first past the post', have modernized their voting in favour of proportional representation including the former British colonies Australia, and New Zealand. |
